Coke fungicide prompts tests of Minute Maid and Simply Orange juices

Coke fungicide:?Coca-Cola Co. alerted the FDA to a?fungicide in its?Minute Maid and Simply Orange?brands of orange juice as well as a competitor's brand.

Coca-Cola Co. acknowledged Thursday it was the company that alerted federal regulators about low levels of?fungicide?in its own orange juice and in competitors' juice, prompting juice prices to rise and increased government testing for the residue.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency have said orange juice is safe to drink and the levels found are below levels of concern.

Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, which makes the Minute Maid and Simply Orange brands of orange juice, said Thursday it had notified FDA of the low levels of the?fungicide?carbendazim in the company's orange juice and in competitors' juice. The FDA had said Monday that an unnamed company had told the agency about thefungicide?and confirmed Wednesday the company was Coca-Cola.

Neither the FDA nor the company said which orange juice products tested positive. Carbendazim is not currently approved for use on citrus in the United States, but it is used to combat mold on orange trees in Brazil, which exports orange juice to the United States.?Fungicides?are used to control fungi or fungal spores in agriculture.

The FDA said Coca-Cola found levels up to 35 parts per billion of the?fungicide, far below the European Union's maximum residue level of 200 parts per billion. The U.S. government has not established an official maximum residue level for carbendazim in orange juice.

The Environmental Protection Agency has said a risk assessment of carbendazim showed no risks at up to 80 parts per billion, but officials believe real levels of concern are much higher.

"The residues we have seen reported at 35 parts per billion are thousands of times below the concentration that would raise safety concerns," said EPA spokeswoman Betsaida Alcantara.

Coca-Cola spokesman Dan Schafer said: "This is an industry issue that affects every company that produces products in the U.S. using orange juice from Brazil."

Ford recalls: Is your SUV, minivan on the list?

Ford recalls older Escape SUVs and Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey for separate safety problems. Fire and loss of power problems triggered the Ford recalls.

Ford is recalling some 450,000 older SUVs and minivans for rare problems that could create a sudden loss of power or a car fire.

The second problem is serious enough that if you own a 2001 or 2002 Ford Escape, the automaker suggests that you keep it parked outside to reduce the remote risk of a fire spreading to your garage or home.

?These vehicles have been on the road for 10 years,? says Daniel Pierce, safety communications manager for Ford Motor?Co., which will begin sending out recall letters Jan. 23 urging Escape owners to have their vehicles checked. ?In the interim, we?d recommend parking the vehicle outside of your garage.?

Some 245,000 Escapes are involved in the one recall. The other recall, triggered by a a faulty torque converter output shaft that could cause a sudden loss of power, involves all 2004 and 2005 models of Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans, nearly 206,000 vehicles. Ford plans to alert Freestar and Monterey owners by letter in the second quarter of the year.

With both Ford recalls, owners will be able to schedule an appointment with a dealer and have the work done free of charge. The Escape check and repair can be handled in a couple of hours, Mr. Pierce says. The minivan repairs can be taken care of in one day depending on when the car is dropped off.

The Dearborn, Mich., automaker is urging owners in each recall to bring their vehicles in to dealers because the torque converter problem in the Freestar and Mercury is undetectable and can happen suddenly. The corrosion that can lead to fires in the Escapes is difficult for motorists to detect.

The Escape recall was triggered by a couple reports of fires caused by a faulty cap on the brake fluid reservoir. The cap can leak, causing the fluid to spread to an electric connector of the antilock brake system (ABS) and create a possible electrical short. ?In some cases, the ABS module could overheat, smoke, or catch fire,? Pierce says. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by the reported fires.

Only 2001 and 2002 Escapes are being recalled because Ford changed to a new cap in subsequent models.

Ford was alerted to the torque converter output shaft problem in Freestar and Monterey minivans after reports of two accidents, one involving minor injuries, Pierce says. The shaft can suddenly fail, which means the engine can no longer propel the minivan forward or backward. Drivers can have the impression their in neutral as they're driving down the highway.

But power brakes and power steering are still available. ?The vehicle will coast and during that time you can maneuver it safely and park,? Pierce says. ?You just can?t slam on the gas.?

Owners with questions can call their local dealer or Ford?s toll-free number: 866-436-7332.

Rick Fedrizzi: Two Years Later: Rebuilding a Resilient Future for Haiti

Two years ago this week, Haiti was hit by the catastrophic earthquake that killed more than 315,000 people. Today, the work to rebuild this poorest country in the Western Hemisphere has barely gotten started.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the U.N. has called this earthquake the largest urban disaster in modern history, affecting 3 million people, displacing 1.5 million and creating 10 million cubic meters of rubble. Two years later, while some significant steps have been made -- less than half of those originally displaced still remain in camps, half of the 10 million cubic meters of rubble has been removed and USAID has provided approximately $108 million for emergency shelter and shelter solutions -- we need to work faster and do so much more.

I've always said the work we do to make our buildings green is about people and making their lives better. That is why the U.S. Green Building Council, along with global architectural firm HOK as the pro-bono design partner, have been working to design and construct Project Haiti, which is aiming to be a LEED Platinum orphanage and children's center in Port au Prince. In an effort to show the children of Haiti that their lives are valued, they deserve to breathe clean air and they are cared about, it will provide for the immediate health and emotional needs of orphans and offer a pathway to adoption. And today, we are proud to release the renderings of Project Haiti, the first of many steps toward our end goal.

This building is our commitment to live up to our ideal. Project Haiti will provide a safe, comfortable and nurturing environment for some of the most vulnerable people in the world. HOK's sustainable design strategies are sensitive to the culture and history of Haiti, while at the same time including passive elements that require minimal maintenance and are not dependent on mechanical systems. Aspects such as natural ventilation, a safe water supply, an on-site power generator that uses solar, wind and biofuel and biomimetic design features will all be incorporated to create a building that is environmentally and financially sustainable for the people of Haiti.

I have witnessed for myself the amazing resiliency of the Haitian people who wake up every morning in the tent cities, wash themselves in a bowl of water and do whatever they can in the oppressive heat and sun to make an honest day's wage. But nothing has had more of an impact than meeting the hundreds of orphans that have made Project Haiti not just a professional obligation, but a personal commitment.

As we soberly acknowledge this two-year mark, I'm asking that you reflect on the efforts being made to rebuild Haiti and the sustainable building practices that are not just for the well-off, but for everyone. To learn more about and support Project Haiti, visit: usgbc.org/haiti

Behind the scenes with live ESPN 3D boxing at CES 2012

ESPN had a presence at this CES like no other we've witnessed from the sports network and the last of the four letter network's big events was Top Rank Boxing live from the show floor. The event drew quite a crowd and the 3D quality didn't disappoint. The crew was using a Sony HDC-P1 camera system with 3D rigs by the Pace Cameron Group all sent through a Sony MVX-8000x production switcher. If you didn't catch it live on ESPN 3D, we're sure there will be plenty of opportunities to catch the 3D reruns.
