On Tuesday, the National Assn. of Realtors said existing home sales increased 3.4% in April from the prior month. And earlier it was reported that new housing starts advanced last month to an annualized rate of 717,000 homes -- the highest level since 2008.

The April sales were almost 10% higher than a year earlier. And the median price, or the midpoint, of new homes sold last month was $230,000 -- up 4.9% from April 2011.

That said, the recent pickup is modest and coming from a very low base. The April pace of new-home sales was still just a fraction of last decade's peak of more than 2 million homes sold in a year, and only about half the average for the last half-century. And uncertainties remain high because of the large number of homes in the foreclosure pipeline.

• A documented percentage of community residents with real ties to the college: Carle believes communities should strive to include former deans, professors, and alumni to add to a sense of connectedness with the university.

Nintendo have been making game consoles for many years, their latest creation the Wii is an amazing piece of kit which on release was ahead of its time. The motion sensor method of controlling your game has revolutionized the way lots of people get their exercise these days, with the creation of the Wii fit.

Nintendo in my opinion make some of the best family games, with characters like super Mario it is all good clean wholesome fun. While the Wii does have some more adult titles it is the kid friendly ones it is best known for.

I find the Wii a great console encouraging you to get up out of your chair and immerse yourself in the experience, but graphically I feel it can?t keep up with the Xbox 360 or playstation 3.

Xbox 360

This truly is an excellent game console; it has nearly everything you could possibly want. Xbox live is a really effective portal to online gaming that is easy to use, within minutes you could be playing your favourite games with someone the other side of the world.

Initially It did not have motion sensor capabilities, but that is about to change with the kinect system being released shortly.

There is a great mix of games available for all members of the family. The Xbox does have HD capabilities and as such is in my opinion graphically superior to the Wii; the ability to download movies and games direct to the hard drive is awesome. All these reasons make the Xbox an exciting addition to any home entertainment set up.

For me though it has to be a playstation 3. It has everything online games, huge hard drive for the mass of downloadable content. The catalogue of games available for the ps3 is immense, with great shooters and family games too.

HD gaming on the ps3 has to be seen to be believed and with more great titles coming the future is looking good. One of the main reasons I enjoy my playstation 3 so much is not only will it play games but it is a very decent blu ray player too.

All the reasons above are from my personal experiences, playing games with friends and family. Ultimately you will choose the game console that suits your situation best, so enjoy all it has to offer and have many years of happy gaming.

Time for Book Ratings on YA Books, Says Dr. Sarah Coyne of Brigham Young University, While ALA Calls it Censorship

Dr. Sarah Coyne of Brigham Young University has recommended that book ratings be used to help parents make informed decisions. ?On the other hand,?Beth Yoke,?Executive Director?of the American Library?Association's [ALA]?Young Adult Library Services Association?[YALSA], says book ratings are "censorship":

• "Is It Time To Rate Young Adult Books for Mature Content? ?A New Report Finds that Nearly All Young Adult Bestsellers Contain at Least Some Profanity," by Jason Koebler, ?U.S. News & World Report, 18 May 2012:

  Coyne thinks a ratings system on book jackets would help parents decide what's appropriate for their kids to read. ?It's a subject many are afraid to touch, with the talk of censorship or restricting books conjuring up images of book burnings and infringing on First Amendment Rights. "I think we put books on a pedestal compared to other forms of media," Coyne says. ?"I thought long and hard about whether to do the study in the first place?I think banning books is a terrible idea, but a content warning on the back I think would empower parents."

  While books like Gossip Girl or Pretty Little Liars aren't ever going to end up alongside Catcher in the Rye or Huckleberry Finn in American literary canon, those books' messages are still important, experts argue.

  "Books can be a safe way for young people to explore edgier, sensitive, or complicated topics, and they provide parents the opportunity to help their teens grow and understand these kinds of sensitive issues," says Beth Yoke, executive director of the Young Adult Library Services Association, an offshoot of the American Library Association. ?"ALA's interpretation on any rating system for books is that it's censorship."

So ALA's YALSA calls it "censorship" to use book ratings to give people/schools the notice needed to make informed decisions as to what's best for their children. ?This from the organization that says?keeping R-rated movies from children is censorship:

And the ALA is the organization that intentionally fakes its annual Top 10 List of Challenged Books to inflate the handful of cases into a national tragedy and push political or social buttons to promote its own interests:

Below is the ALA's view on labeling and rating systems?basically, it is censorship. ?Keep in mind the ALA also said it was censorship to filter computers in public libraries. ?Its bluff was called on that in US v. ALA?where the Court found it is not censorship.

Should Microsoft buy Research in Motion?

Here?s how it all breaks down:

• It doesn?t take an astute observer to realize that RIM is dying.
• It takes even less knowledge of the mobile industry to know that Microsoft desperately wants to compete and excel in phone and tablets.
• Both companies have problems that are best represented by two companies: Apple and Google.

Why doesn?t Research In Motion simply sell at any cost to Microsoft? They are losing executives and cutting employees. No measure of restructuring can save their plummeting market share or improve their dismal outlook. They need help in a big way.

Microsoft needs to make some moves. Google just finalized the purchase of Motorola Mobility. Apple prints money and would sell the heck out of anything they put out even if they eliminated their marketing department completely. RIM needs to sell. It all adds up if Microsoft is willing to take the plunge.

It makes sense for both companies. Microsoft has a stranglehold on business productivity software. RIM once had a stranglehold on business mobile software. Together, they may be able to make a play to change the trend towards iOS and Android in mobile. Almost as importantly, the Blackberry software has always had an upperhand with translating desktop application integration onto mobile devices.

Amazon will be in the mix off and on if they aren?t stung by RIM?s dismissal of them last year. Apple wouldn?t want to get involved and Google is a longshot. This leaves big telecom companies, the Chinese telecoms, and Microsoft as the only likely suitors.

By 2013, RIM will be on the way out the door as a company if they don?t get help soon. Microsoft?s situation is much less precarious but the company?s conservative approach to mergers and acquisitions has contributed to them entering the mobile game late and not being able to move up quickly enough to compete. When these situations are all considered, the answer to the question becomes pretty clear.

Microsoft should buy RIM.

A wildfire that started Wednesday in Michigan?s Upper Peninsula is on track to become the state?s third-largest wildfire in more than 140 years.

Dry conditions, high temperatures, and strong winds in the region are preventing fire officials from suppressing a blaze in Luce County, which encompasses Lake Superior State Forest. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the fire can be tracked to a lightning strike in the area. On Thursday, the blaze spread across 9,500 acres, intensifying Friday when the fire burned a total of 17,000 acres, or more than 26 square miles.

Officials say the fire is spreading by the tops of jack pines.

No injuries are reported to date. Evacuations have been ordered. State officials say six buildings were destroyed and over 40 more are under threat.

The state department of natural resources reports that by May 13, before the current blaze they are calling the Duck Lake fire, a total of 239 wildfires have burned over 1,800 acres in the state, destroying 25 buildings. By the same date last year, a total of 80 wildfires are on record.

May marks the end of Michigan?s three-month wildfire season, although blazes are known to ignite at other parts of the year. This recent season posed significant risks considering the warm summer temperatures that set records for much of March and April.

The state estimates that between 8,000 to 10,000 wildfires burn each year, but they are often small, covering between five to 50 acres.

In addition to the Duck Lake fire, fire crews also battled the Seney fire, a wildfire that started Monday that ended up destroying as many as 3,200 acres, or five square miles, in the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, west of the Duck Lake fire. The refuge, which covers about 95,000 acres, remains closed. No injuries or building damage is reported, officials said.

The last significant wildfire in Michigan was the Sleeper Lake fire of 2007, which burned 18,000 acres, also in Luce County in the Upper Peninsula. At the time, the blaze was registered as the third largest in the state since 1881, the year when 1.1 million acres were destroyed in the ?thumb? region of the Lower Peninsula of the state, resulting in 282 dead.

The second most damaging wildfire in the state took place in 1980 near Mio, Mich., which spread over 25,000 acres, destroying 44 homes and resulting in one death.
