Star explodes and turns inside out

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? A new X-ray study of the remains of an exploded star indicates that the supernova that disrupted the massive star may have turned it inside out in the process. Using very long observations of Cassiopeia A (or Cas A), a team of scientists has mapped the distribution elements in the supernova remnant in unprecedented detail. This information shows where the different layers of the pre-supernova star are located three hundred years after the explosion, and provides insight into the nature of the supernova.

An artist's illustration on the left shows a simplified picture of the inner layers of the star that formed Cas A just before it exploded, with the predominant concentrations of different elements represented by different colors: iron in the core (blue), overlaid by sulfur and silicon (green), then magnesium, neon and oxygen (red). The image from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory on the right uses the same color scheme to show the distribution of iron, sulfur and magnesium in the supernova remnant. The data show that the distributions of sulfur and silicon are similar, as are the distributions of magnesium and neon. Oxygen, which according to theoretical models is the most abundant element in the remnant, is difficult to detect because the X-ray emission characteristic of oxygen ions is strongly absorbed by gas in along the line of sight to Cas A, and because almost all the oxygen ions have had all their electrons stripped away.

A comparison of the illustration and the Chandra element map shows clearly that most of the iron, which according to theoretical models of the pre-supernova was originally on the inside of the star, is now located near the outer edges of the remnant. Surprisingly, there is no evidence from X-ray (Chandra) or infrared (Spitzer Space Telescope) observations for iron near the center of the remnant, where it was formed. Also, much of the silicon and sulfur, as well as the magnesium, is now found toward the outer edges of the still-expanding debris. The distribution of the elements indicates that a strong instability in the explosion process somehow turned the star inside out.

This latest work, which builds on earlier Chandra observations, represents the most detailed study ever made of X-ray emitting debris in Cas A, or any other supernova remnant resulting from the explosion of a massive star. It is based on a million seconds of Chandra observing time. Tallying up what they see in the Chandra data, astronomers estimate that the total amount of X-ray emitting debris has a mass just over three times that of the Sun. This debris was found to contain about 0.13 times the mass of the Sun in iron, 0.03 in sulfur and only 0.01 in magnesium.

The researchers found clumps of almost pure iron, indicating that this material must have been produced by nuclear reactions near the center of the pre-supernova star, where the neutron star was formed. That such pure iron should exist was anticipated because another signature of this type of nuclear reaction is the formation of the radioactive nucleus titanium-44, or Ti-44. Emission from Ti-44, which is unstable with a half-life of 63 years, has been detected in Cas A with several high-energy observatories including the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, BeppoSAX, and the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL). These results appeared in the February 20th issue of The Astrophysical Journal in a paper by Una Hwang of Goddard Space Flight Center and Johns Hopkins University, and (John) Martin Laming of the Naval Research Laboratory. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., manages the Chandra program for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory controls Chandra's science and flight operations from Cambridge, Mass.

PFT: Parcells sounds like he'll coach Saints if asked

San Francisco 49ers v San Diego ChargersGetty Images

Free agency has come screeching to a halt, but there are still some interesting names available on the open market.

Here?s a breakdown of the top ten players left unsigned on the PFT Hot 100.

1. Offensive tackle Marcus McNeill ? Released by San Diego on March 13, McNeill visited the Lions a day later but left without a contract. He was rumored to have meetings lined up with the Falcons and Chiefs, but they apparently fell through. While McNeill has two Pro Bowls and 82 starts at a premium NFL position on his resume at age 28, medical concerns have clearly hurt McNeill?s market value.

2. Offensive tackle Demetrius Bell ? Bell has drawn interest from the Redskins and Cardinals, and will visit the Packers later this week. Like McNeill, Bell is a 28-year-old starting-caliber left tackle who?s been plagued by injuries. Bell?s medical concerns aren?t as significant as McNeill?s, however, and it would be surprising if he wasn?t signed soon.

3. Linebacker David Hawthorne ? A beastly run defender, Hawthorne?s market appeared to be established when Stephen Tulloch (Lions) and Curtis Lofton (Saints) were signed. Hawthorne remains available, however, after visits with Detroit and New Orleans proved to be leverage plays by those teams. Adam Caplan did report on Tuesday that the Seahawks and Hawthorne ?continue to be in communication,? so perhaps he?ll re-sign with Seattle.

4. Linebacker London Fletcher ? Fletcher still hasn?t signed, but it?s been widely assumed that he?ll head back to D.C. Perhaps that?s why no other teams have seriously inquired. As Alper noted a couple of days ago, league-imposed cap penalties against the Redskins have affected negotiations with Fletcher.

5. Defensive end Andre Carter ? Carter racked up double-digit sacks in 14 games last year, but he hasn?t been signed because he?s still ?limping heavily? after a late-season quadriceps tear. Carter should find work quickly once he?s healthy.

6. Defensive end Matt Roth ? The Bengals are Roth?s only known free-agent visit, and their interest seems to have cooled after signing twin draft busts Jamaal Anderson and Derrick Harvey. Roth isn?t a bad pass rusher and sets the edge as a run defender. He can also play linebacker in a 3-4. It?s only a matter of time before he catches on somewhere.

7. Defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin ? Franklin?s career peak was receiving the 49ers? franchise tag in 2010. His 2011 market was surprisingly slow, and he?s now going on age 32. Franklin is coming off a disappointing season in New Orleans, struggling for playing time. The 2011 game tape may be turning off teams.

8. Offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie ? The Giants have already cut ties publicly with McKenzie, their starting right tackle since the 2005 campaign. Going on age 33, he may have to wait for training camp to be signed.

9. Defensive end Luis Castillo ? A productive but injury-prone 3-4 defensive end, Castillo has visited the Patriots and Chiefs in free agency, but likely was offered only the veteran?s minimum after missing all but one game last season. The Chargers also have an offer on the table to keep him. Castillo is only 28 years old with plenty of starts on his resume.

10. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards ? The Jets have expressed some interest in the top wide receiver left on the market, but it?s believed Edwards is still rehabbing from the knee surgery that forced the 49ers to give up on him in December. Edwards is 29 years old. He can separate from defensive backs with the best of ?em when healthy and is an underrated blocker, but untimely drops and off-field concerns have tarnished his image as an NFL player.

Coast man named Small Business Person of the Year - Moss Point ...

PASCAGOULA -- Charles Fuqua?s lawn service has expanded to include a garden center that he opened this month on Chicot Road.

It?s about a block north of Lowe?s garden center. But Fuqua, Mississippi?s Small Business Person of the Year, said he?s not worried about the competition.

He thinks he will co-exist with the big store just fine. They may even create a hub for people with gardening needs, he said.

It?s this business philosophy and a strong, multi-generational work ethic, that has won Fuqua, 32, the state award and national recognition.

He will represent Mississippi in Washington, D.C., on May 18 and be honored at a reception at the IP in Biloxi in June with the winners of six other state SBA awards.

Fuqua started seven years ago cutting yards part-time. His full-time job at that time was working on automobile electronics and air conditioning for Ford. But soon he was making more money cutting yards than he was at his main job.

So he made the leap of faith, after praying with his wife, and went full-time with Four Seasons Lawn Service, a business that has doubled in gross revenue each year since 2005.

Methodically planning the way his business would grow, Fuqua added landscaping, installing brick pavers and irrigation to what he had to offer. And the customer base grew.

He went to college and got an associate degree in horticulture, studying when he wasn?t growing the business, coaching his children?s soccer teams or keeping up with church obligations.

?I got about four hours of sleep a night,? he said.

Then this month, he opened Four Season?s Garden Center in a fenced parking lot off Chicot Road.

The garden center is an aluminium carport structure on a neatly graveled lot with hugh mulch stalls he built himself, rows and rows of plants, lawn ornaments and pots.

He said he offers a different type of product than the big stores. Besides locally-grown plants, he offers attentive customer service and the ability to acquire just about any plant or tree a customer wants within two days.

?My goal here is to meet people?s needs,? he said. ?A lot of people come here to look for things specifically.?

He uses a network of local nurseries to supply his customer needs, and one for his own use.

?The longer we are here, the more we?ll grown our own,? he said.

He credits the Jackson County Small Business Incubator with encouraging him and giving him some of the tools he needed to make a go of his small business, like marketing.

Role of mathematics in modern economics - Education - EzineMark

Mathematics has become an important tool in modern economics. Almost every field in modern economics uses mathematics and statistics. The mathematical approach to economic analysis is used when economists make use of mathematical symbols in the statement of a problem and also draw upon known mathematical theorems to aid in reasoning. It is not difficult to understand why the mathematical approach has become a dominant approach since finding the boundary of a theory, developing an analytical framework of a theory, establishing reference systems, and providing analytical tools all need mathematics. When discussing an economic issue, it is very important to distinguish between:

  1. Two types of conditions: necessary and sufficient conditions for a statement to be true and
  2. ?Two types of statements: positive analysis and normative analysis. It is easy to confuse the distinction between necessary conditions and sufficient conditions, a problem that results often in incorrect conclusions.

For instance, it is often heard that the market institution should not be used based on the fact that some countries are market economies but remain poor. The reason this logic results in a wrong conclusion is that they did not realize the adoption of a market mechanism is just a necessary condition for a country to be rich, but is not a sufficient condition. Becoming a rich country also depends on other factors such as political system, social infrastructures, and culture. Additionally, no example of a country can be found so far that it is rich in the long run, that is not a market economy.?

If we apply a theoretical result to real world without knowing the boundary of a theory, we may get a very bad consequence and hurt an economy seriously.? Some of the advantages of using mathematics are that

  1. the ?language" used and the descriptions of assumptions are clearer, more accurate, and more precise,
  2. the logical process of analysis is more rigorous and clearly sets the boundaries and limitations of a statement,
  3. it can give a new result that may not be easily obtained through observation alone, and
  4. It can reduce unnecessary debates and improve or extend existing results. It should be remarked that, although mathematics is of critical importance in modern economics, economics is not mathematics. Economics uses mathematics as a tool in order to model and analyze various economic problems. Statistics and econometrics are used to test or measure the accuracy of our predication, and identify causalities among economic variables. Thus, the production of an economic conclusion usually goes in two stages:

Stage 1: (non-mathematical language stage) Produce preliminary outputs, propose economic ideas, intuitions, and conjectures.

Stage 2: (mathematical language stage) Produce inter-mediate outputs, give a formal and rigorous result through mathematical modeling that specifies the boundary of a theory.

(AP) ? Authorities investigating France's deadly shooting rampage have released the mother of the Islamist fanatic blamed for the killings but continue to hold his older brother and the older brother's girlfriend, officials said Saturday.

Police are trying to determine whether 24-year-old Mohamed Merah had any help in carrying out the execution-style murders of seven people that have shocked France and refocused attention on the threat of radical Muslim terrorists.

Merah's brother, Abdelkader, was flown to Paris for further questioning Saturday, along with his girlfriend, but a lawyer for Merah's mother, 55-year-old Zoulika Aziri, said she had been released without charge. Jean-Yves Gougnaud told reporters in the southern French city of Toulouse that Aziri's world had been "turned upside down."

"She is devastated," he told reporters after her release. "At no time could she have imagined that her son was the one who did it."

Aziri was freed late Friday from a police station in Toulouse, a judicial official said on condition of anonymity because the information wasn't cleared for public release.

Mohamed Merah, who claimed allegiance to al-Qaida, died in a hail of gunfire Thursday after a dramatic 32-hour standoff with police at his apartment in Toulouse. At one point, police brought his mother to the scene, but she refused to urge her son to surrender, officials said.

Merah had filmed himself carrying out attacks in southern France that began March 11 and killed three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three French paratroopers with close-range shots to the head, prosecutors say. Another Jewish student and a paratrooper were wounded, and five police officers were injured trying to dislodge Merah from the apartment.

Investigators are trying to figure out whether Merah, a Frenchman of Algerian descent, acted alone.

Key questions include how Merah, described by French intelligence boss Ange Mancini as "a little failure from the suburbs," was able to amass an arsenal of weapons ? including an Uzi sub-machinegun ? and rent a car, despite having no clear source of income.

Mancini told French broadcaster BFMTV that Merah told police during the siege that he bought the weapons for 20,000 euros, using money he acquired through break-ins and holdups.

Mancini said he believed that Merah was telling the truth about that, but suggested that forensic police would be examining the guns for clues as to where Merah got them.

"The weapons, too, will talk," Mancini said.

Merah had claimed that neither his mother nor his brother knew of his plans, but police union spokesman Christophe Crepin told reporters that detectives have already gathered evidence to suggest that Abdelkader may have helped his brother carry out the shootings.

Asked what police had on the brother, Crepin said there was evidence to suggest that Abdelkader Merah had "furnished means (and) worked as an accomplice."

Crepin refused to comment further, saying it was for a judge to decide what charges, if any, to bring. Under French law if either of the two continue to be held beyond the weekend, preliminary charges will have to be filed.

Abdelkader had already come under police radar, according to officials. He was questioned several years ago about alleged links to a network sending Toulouse-area youths to Iraq, but no action was brought against him at the time.

Back in the southern French city of Toulouse, where Merah held out in an apartment building for more than a day against one of France's most elite police units, residents were beginning to return home to inspect the damage.

Video footage shot by police of the inside of Merah's apartment showed a shattered three-room residence strewn with debris from the fighting and gaping bullet holes in the walls.

Building resident Farida Bohama was quoted by France's Le Figaro newspaper as saying nothing would ever be the same.

"I really want to move," she said.

Japanese university to battle eel fraud with cheap, rapid DNA testing

By Jay Alabaster, IDG News Service?|?? Add a new comment

A science institute in central Japan says it has devised a system to stop eel fraud using cheap DNA testing, as the summer surge in the foodstuff's popularity approaches amid a scarce local catch.

Eel caught locally is much more expensive than imports, due to trade restrictions and the declining numbers available on the market, and in recent years fraud has become a issue. Consumers are rarely able to tell the difference, but advances in DNA testing, which put most of the key technology on a single chip, have made such tests faster and more affordable.

Current DNA sequencing chips incorporate existing technologies such as CMOS sensors, based on the same technology as digital cameras, and prices for sequencing are falling. The cost of sequencing a human-sized genome has fallen into the thousands of dollars since the Human Genome Project was completed in 2003 at a cost of billions.

The slender, snaky fish are often served "kabayaki" style during the summer, cooked in thin slices with a sweet sauce. The traditional dish is thought to help avoid fatigue associated with Japan's hot, humid summer climate, and every year demand surges, increasing the chance of fraud.

"In the past tests had to check each eel individually, which costs 20,000 to 30,000 yen," said Toshihiro Tsuneyoshi, a professor and eel specialist at Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology, where the test was developed. "This system can drive costs down to 20 or 30 yen per eel."

The Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology said it can simultaneously test small tissue samples from thousands of eels, greatly reducing the cost and time required for testing. If a non-local eel is found in a batch, more tests will be performed to find the guilty foreigner, but as such cases are currently rare costs should remain low, Tsuneyoshi said. The university used testing equipment from California-based Life Technologies.

He said a similar system can also be used for other pricey foods where consumers can be easily duped, such as pricier cuts of tuna.

For now, concerned connoisseurs will have to rely on tests done by government inspectors, but DNA sequencing capabilities are already starting to appear in pocket-sized devices for other applications.

Artificial pheromone controls invasive ant dance

Sandrine Ceurstemont, New Scientist TV

With a little trickery, you can make invasive ants follow your rules. A new installation called Ant Ballet, created by designer Ollie Palmer, in collaboration with biologist Seirian Sumner from the Institute of Zoology in London, uses an artificial pheromone to disrupt the movement of foraging ants.

In this video, you can watch Argentine ants getting fooled in Spain, where Palmer travelled to set up his artistic experiment. A nest in a tabletop becomes the ants' new home and a robotic arm in the middle periodically sprays out a powdered pheromone, which was developed in collaboration with a team of researchers from University College London. Since ants lay down chemical trails which they follow in search for food, the fake scent makes them deviate from their intended route.

Palmer has also created a foraging simulation based on trail-following behaviour (see end of video). Virtual ants move according to simple rules, governed by an algorithm and a tendency to steer towards pheromone patches. "About half of the ants lay trails, while the other half are passive," says Palmer. "This negates any complexity within the environment and behavioural changes due to the presence of food."

Although the simulation is highly simplified, Sumner is impressed by the collective organisation that emerges in the artwork. She also thinks that the demonstrations with live ants could be useful for research. "The intention is to control their dance, but from a scientific point of view it has exciting potential for conservation," she says. "An important component of applied research into invasive ant species is understanding how we can disrupt colony function."

The simulation is currently on display at the London Zoo in the first public exhibition of the work. The first demonstration with real ants will take place later this year at Pestival, an art festival celebrating insects, in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

If you enjoyed this post, watch ants mimic fluids or colonise a scanner.

Texas' 2011 drought costliest in state history: researchers

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Texas agriculture producers lost $7.62 billion to the state's 2011 drought, which experts said makes it the costliest drought in the state's history and possibly the most expensive drought ever suffered by any state.

"No one alive has seen single-year drought damage to this extent," said Travis Miller, an agricultural economist at Texas A&M University.

"Texas farmers and ranchers are not strangers to drought, but the intensity of the drought, reflected in record high temperatures, record low precipitation, unprecedented winds coupled with duration, all came together to devastate production agriculture," he said.

The new figures released Wednesday by the university's AgriLife Extension Service go beyond estimates of $5.2 billion in losses released last fall, which counted only losses through the end of August.

Hardest hit were the state's livestock ranchers, followed by the state's cotton producers. Texas is by far the largest producer of both commodities in the United States, producing roughly 15 percent of the beef cattle and 25 percent of the nation's cotton, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture figures. Livestock producers lost $3.23 billion, and cotton growers lost $2.2 billion.

The impact of the losses on Texas farm families is enormous, said Gene Hall of the Texas Farm Bureau.

Many ranchers tried buying hay from as far away as Montana, but when that became too expensive, they were forced to sell their herds, including the young heifers which are the basis for the future of their ranches, Hall said.

But Hall added that most farmers plan to "ride it out," and hope for better days, and more rain.

State Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples said the "pain and the damage" caused by the drought cannot be overstated.

"Our state's farmers and ranchers are determined in their commitment and fierce in their resolve," Staples said.

Miller said millions of acres of Texas crops never got off the ground.

"Even irrigated farmers experienced huge losses as water supplies that they could deliver were not adequate to produce crops under these conditions with no rain," Miller said. "The drought started in the fall of 2010, resulting in very little winter grazing. Many of our pastures and hay meadows never greened up after the winter."

Hall said the impact will be higher prices for consumers nationwide for everything from steak to shirts.

Miller said that while the figures confirm it was the costliest drought ever for Texas, he said it was likely the worst drought ever in the United States in terms of agriculture losses, but that is difficult to confirm because states use different metrics in determining drought losses.

The loss figures of $7.62 billion do not include losses in the state's lucrative commercial timber industry.

"The commercial timber forested area of East Texas was among the hardest hit," said Burl Carroway of the Texas Forest Service, adding that an estimated $558 million of standing trees that could have been sold for timber, succumbed to the drought.

As the 2012 planting season begins, there is room for a certain amount of optimism. The U.S. Drought Monitor says the urban areas of east and central Texas are emerging from the drought, and drenching rains that fell earlier this week in the eastern two-thirds of the state will help the recovery process.

But across the wide expanses of West Texas, which is home to much of the state's cattle population, the drought lingers as the state moves into the traditionally hot and dry summer months.

No snow, no problem: Green-powered indoor skiing

54 min.

Ski season 2011-2012 for many adrenaline junkies in the U.S. is rotten, thanks to unseasonable warmth in the Northeast and below average snowfall in much of Utah, Colorado, and California.?

What's to blame? Global warming? La Nina? Natural variability? Whatever the reason, Swedish skiers got sick of the trend of reduced snowfall and took matters into their own hands: They convinced an architecture firm to design an indoor ski park that will be powered by green energy.

Construction of the nearly U.S. $3 billion Skipark 360? is slated to begin at the end of 2013, according to the firm, C.F. M?ller Architects, Berg Arkitektkontor.

The marquee structure is the 2,300-foot long slope with a 525-foot vertical drop, big enough, the group says, to make it the "only indoor ski slope in the world to meet the requirements for hosting the World Cup."

While this is far from the first indoor ski area - there are about 30 in use around the world today, the most famous in Dubai - this may be the greenest.

Solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal sources of energy will meet its anticipated 10 million kilowatt-hours of energy a year ? a nice feature given that rising consumption of fossil fuel energy is "very likely" to blame for the changes in the global climate that are making snowfall scarcer in some parts of the world.

The facility, which will also include a cross-country track and a snowboard park, will be open year round. It is being built about 45 minutes outside of Stockholm and expected to attract 550,000 visitors a year.

For skiers and snowboarders who'd rather get a face full of power in the great outdoors, head to the Pacific Northwest. Despite snow woes elsewhere in the country, Washington's Mt. Baker,?for example, reports a 258 inch base and season total, as of March 14, of 654 inches.

Fibre optics to connect Japan to the UK ? via the Arctic

Looping fibre optics from Japan under the Arctic ice will improve internet performance ? but is easier said than done

THE retreat of sea ice is bringing 21st-century communications to the Arctic. In mid-August, construction should start on the first submarine fibre-optic cables to cross the Arctic Ocean, providing digital shortcuts between London and Tokyo, Japan.

Two cables are planned through the fabled North-West Passage above North America, while a third is planned along the Russian coast. The longest of these links will become the world's longest single stretch of optical fibre.

Sea ice and icebergs pose unique challenges. Ships rated to work in ice-ridden waters are needed to lay the cable, and operations are possible for only a few months of the year. Yet there are advantages to laying cables in the Arctic, says Denis Tsesarenko, a director of the Polarnet Project, which is building the Russian Optical Trans-Arctic Submarine Cable System (ROTACS). Once laid, the cable should be largely safe from the biggest threats to cables in warmer waters: fishing trawlers and ships' anchors are extremely rare in the Arctic.

Meanwhile, a 15,600-kilometre link via the Canadian Arctic, to be built by Arctic Fibre of Toronto, Canada, will cut the present round-trip time, or "latency", between London and Tokyo from 230 milliseconds to 168 milliseconds, claims company president Doug Cunningham (see map). Reduced transmission time will be a boon for high-frequency traders who will gain crucial milliseconds on each automated trade. Optical amplifiers will boost signal strength every 50 to 100 kilometres. The firm also plans to drill a tunnel 40 metres deep to take a shortcut through the Boothia isthmus in the Canadian Arctic - a thin strip of land that connects the Boothia peninsula to the mainland. Isolated Arctic communities will also be connected by extra sections of cable that branch off from the main one.

A third project, by Arctic Link, a firm based in Anchorage, Alaska, is planned to begin in 2014.

A big plus for the Arctic cables is that they avoid failure-prone "choke points" such as the Luzon strait near Taiwan, the strait of Malacca between Indonesia and Malaysia, and the crowded and politically unsettled Middle East. A single landslide or a ship dragging its anchor in these areas can break several cables, disrupting internet traffic.

Crucial parts of the North-West Passage are nominally ice-free from 20 August to 5 October, but you cannot rely on the fact that the ice will be open, says Chris Carobene, managing director for marine construction at TE SubCom, based in Morristown, New Jersey, which is not currently involved in these projects. Ships must be built to withstand the pounding of ice as well as waves. "Your cable ship needs a polar-ice rating even when you are working with an ice breaker," he says. Standard cable ships are not built to withstand ice, so ice-rated ships built for other purposes will be converted to lay the cables.

Icebergs can plough more than a metre into the ocean floor, endangering cables. Greenland's icebergs extend to depths as great as 170 metres below the sea surface, so Arctic Fibre will lay cable at least 600 metres deep in the Davis strait, where icebergs are most likely. The underside of sea ice also has ridges, or "bummocks", that reach depths of 18 metres, so Arctic Fibre aims to stay at least 50 metres down.

As Carobene says: "Ice is just another risk our industry has to manage."

Someone Please Notify Me When The Santorum Traveling Carnival Show Is Over

?? ~ by OneMoreOption

Rick Santorum?s campaign released this position paper on Santorum?s campaign website.? It is undated and unsigned, but it speaks in the first person, using ?I,? so I?ll infer Santorum approved it.?? The web page can be found here:? http://www.ricksantorum.com/enforcing-laws-against-illegal-pornography

The paper?s comments are in red.? My thoughts are in blue:

Enforcing laws against illegal pornography

America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography.? A wealth of research is now available demonstrating that pornography causes profound brain changes in both children and adults, resulting in widespread negative consequences. Addiction to pornography is now common for adults and even for some children.

A pandemic?? What measurable harm does?Santorum?cite???Santorum does not cite one peer-reviewed study as a point of authority.? If this was a high school English essay, it would fail for making only claims, but citing no points of authority.? A ?wealth of research??? How about naming one respected research study or paper?? Profound damage to the brain?? Like what?? This is such snake oil salesmanship.? Negative consequences?? Such as??? Porn ?addiction? is common?? How about giving some data?? Even if adults are ?addicted? to sexual imagery, is this a problem?? We don?t suggest men who want sex regularly have a sexual ?addiction? problem.? A regular, consistent, and healthy appetite for sexual stimulation is not an addiction.? It?s a disservice to people who genuinely have addiction problems to characterize a regular?appetite for sexual imagery as an addiction.

The average age of first exposure to hard-core, Internet pornography is now 11.?Pornography is toxic to marriages and relationships. It contributes to misogyny and violence against women.? It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking.

What?s the average ?first exposure? children have to violent actions where people or cartoons maim or kill each other?? Is there any reputable study that suggests a child is measurably harmed from viewing hard-core (or soft-core, or intermediate to middleweight-core) sexual imagery?? To answer this rhetorical question:? No, there is not.? It?s all speculation from fearmongers like Santorum.??Is pornography?toxic to marriages and relationships?? No, it is not commonly harmful to marriages where ?pornography? is not presumed to be a negative thing.? Many more marriages would probably dissolve if men did not have regular sexual imagery?to address their more frequent (on average) sexual drives.? Men can safely masturbate in the privacy of their homes, not damaging their relationship commitments, and reducing their number of partners and the transfer rates and prevalence of STDs.? Porn doesn?t contribute to violence against women any more than ?Law & Order? or the next summer action movie or horror flick.? It is a far healthier thing to allow people to consider their curiosities through viewing fictional content than for them to try everything in real life.? Watching ?Harry Potter? doesn?t contribute to the prevalence of wizardry.

Every family must now be concerned about the harm from pornography. As a parent, I am concerned about the widespread distribution of illegal obscene pornography and its profound effects on our culture. ? For many decades, the American public has actively petitioned the United States Congress for laws prohibiting distribution of hard-core adult pornography.

Who is Santorum going to set up on the ?Porn-Core Rating Committee????Which of his buddies will get that fortunate appointment where they sit in a dark room together, or separately in the privacy of their cubicle and computer monitor, to evaluate the literally millions of new sexual imagery videos and photographs created by Hollywood, the international porn industry, the fashion industry, and amateur photographers and videographers?? What a fuckin? joke.? Pun intended.? The ?American Public,? at least a majority of them, has?not petitioned Congress for laws prohibiting hard-core porn ? at least not for the last few decades.??Men in general?have not had a free hand to sign the petition ? at least not since the advent of the home PC and a fast internet connection.? If the American Public really wanted this to happen, such a movement would have already virally set Facebook ablaze.? Conservatives are so weird on sexual issues sometimes.? It?s like that ?One Million Moms? group ? who by the way, still have only about 45,600 members ? the few trying to control the actions, preferences, and liberties of the many.

Congress has responded.? Current federal ?obscenity? laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier. Rick Santorum believes that federal obscenity laws should be vigorously enforced.? ?If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so.???

Yawn.? First, this is not true ? Congress has not banned the distribution of hard-core porn or any other (insert your favorite porn adjective here) porn.? Second, it?s mindless saber rattling.? Third, if Santorum had?more intelligence, he?d know this is bad politics and misguided social policy ? pandering to an?under-educated social minority ? to the detriment of a diverse majority.

The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws. While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration.?

?Scourge of pornography??? Is that like the ?scourge of teen pregnancy? or the ?scourge of diminishing church attendance??? If Obama?s cool with both healthy families and healthy pornography ? that sounds like a more even-keel, mature, and informed position.

I proudly support the efforts of the War on Illegal Pornography Coalition that has tirelessly fought to get federal obscenity laws enforced.? That coalition is composed of 120 national, state, and local groups, including Morality in Media, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, American Family Association, Cornerstone Family Council of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania Family Institute, Concerned Women for America, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, and a host of other groups.? Together we will prevail.

I hope not, because that would be silly nonsense.? It would be like trying to re-institute alcohol prohibition.? It is such a silly aspiration as to be almost not?be worth discussion ? except that a?guy?running for the Republican Presidential candidacy thinks discussing the policy will garner him some more votes.

- -

For regular readers and writers:?? Thank you to old and new subscribers.? You know I don?t spend much time on this forum??getting down in the mud to wrestle with buffoons & charlatans.? But Santorum is running for President of the United States and people need to point out when he?s being self-serving and stupid.
